This is an online guide to the Dance Collection at the State Library of New South Wales, which encompasses dance in all its forms but especially ballet, modern and contemporary dance performances in Sydney including those of overseas companies which have significantly influenced dance in Australia. It is a rich and diverse collection which includes books, periodicals, programmes, pictorial material - including a large photographic component - and manuscript items such as letters and business papers mostly relating to New South Wales but with 19th century holdings of other Australian states. A particular strength of this collection is dance material from the period prior to 1940 particularly pictures, manuscripts and journals on theatre and the performing arts.
